Nourishing Futures: Good Care Community Trust’s Breakfast Program for Students
Updated: Nov 27, 2024
Supporting Our Community, One Breakfast at a Time
Good Care Community Trust (GCCT) is making strides in its mission to support local communities by addressing one of the most fundamental needs: nutrition. With a focus on low-decile schools, the Community Support Program aims to provide daily breakfasts to students, ensuring they start their day with the fuel needed for growth, learning, and success.
The Objective
The program’s primary goal is simple but impactful:
• To provide nutritious breakfasts to students in low-decile schools.
By supporting young learners, GCCT aims to contribute to their physical and mental development, helping them focus better in school and grow into healthy, capable individuals.
Progress So Far
GCCT approached 30-35 schools across the Auckland and Paeroa/Hauraki regions to introduce this initiative. After detailed discussions, two schools expressed their willingness to participate:
1. Manurewa High School, 67 Browns Road, Manurewa
2. Miller Avenue School, 30 Miller Avenue, Paeroa
The program officially launched at:
• Manurewa High School in October 2024
• Miller Avenue School in November 2024
Following consultations with the schools to finalize breakfast items, GCCT partnered with suppliers to ensure a consistent supply of quality meals.
Daily Operations
• Volunteer Support: GCCT members actively assist in the preparation of meals in the Manurewa High School kitchen every day, from Monday to Friday.
• Delivery Commitment: Breakfast items are delivered daily to both schools, ensuring no student starts their day hungry.
This hands-on approach reflects GCCT’s dedication to not just serving meals but being an active part of the community they support.
Positive Impact
The breakfast program is already leaving a significant mark:
• Healthy Growth: Students are benefiting from balanced meals that support their physical and mental well-being.
• Improved Learning: Nutrition plays a vital role in concentration and academic performance. The free breakfasts are helping students focus better in class.
• Community Support: The school faculty, staff, and families have expressed heartfelt gratitude for GCCT’s efforts. A reference email from the schools (included in GCCT’s appendix) underscores this appreciation.
Looking Ahead
Good Care Community Trust has committed to applying for funding every month to sustain this program. By ensuring long-term support for these schools, GCCT aims to expand its reach and make an even greater difference in the lives of young learners across the South Auckland and Paeroa regions.
A Word of Thanks
This program is a testament to the power of community and collaboration. GCCT extends its deepest thanks to the schools, suppliers, volunteers, and supporters who make this initiative possible. Together, we are nourishing futures and building a brighter tomorrow.
